Some people feel comfortable having their pics on messenger i don't use my pic but I use something from yahoo images because I sometimes get bored with the avatar

i think its weird to be comfortable with accepting generic character to be a suitable likeness as yourself knowing that anyone else could arbitrarily do the same thing
fortunately im not concerned enough to try to change mine to a pic
